The first step toward recovery is identifying the type of sleep disorder

  • Insomnia: a persistent inability to fall or stay asleep.
  • Hypersomnia: sleeping too much or sleeping at inappropriate times. Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy are the chief causes of severe hypersomnia.
  • Sleep Apnea: a life-threatening disorder which causes you to stop breathing repeatedly during your sleep.
  • Narcolepsy: a lifelong disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks during the day.
  • Parasomnia: problems that occur only during sleep or are brought about by sleep, such as nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking, abnormal movements, and bedwetting.
  • Disorders of the sleep-wake cycle: this occurs when the opportunity to sleep does not coincide with the body's ability to stay awake and to sleep. This state often occurs in patients who are on shift work.

  • Diagnostic evaluation

We are located at the intersection of Daniel Morgan and North Pine street, directly across the street from Vic Bailey Motors. We offer diagnostic testing of sleep-wake disorders. Physiological responses are recorded while the patient sleeps so that the sleep-wake disorder and related medical problems can be correctly diagnosed. We then interpret the data and forward it to the patient's referring physician with treatment recommendations.

    What to expect

When you arrive at the center at 8:00 pm, use the second driveway, around the back of the building. Enter through the door and a technologist will greet you and show you to your bedroom. You will be shown the equipment that will be used and given a chance to ask questions. You should inform the technologist of any changes in your sleep or specific difficulties you have not already discussed with your healthcare professional.

You will have time to change into nightclothes and get ready for bed as you do at home. There may be a waiting period before the technologist applies the electrodes, and you can read, watch TV, or relax during this time. If you have a commitment in the morning (i.e., you must be at work at a certain time), be sure to inform the sleep technologist prior to your study, so a wake-up time should be also be confirmed when you arrive at the sleep center.

How to know if the Center for Disorders of Sleep and Fatigue can help you

One out of three Americans has a sleep disorder which makes life miserable, whether the person is asleep or awake. Many of these people suffer needlessly simply because they are unaware that a problem exists. If you are experiencing a persistent sleeping problem that impairs your ability to perform either at work or socially, or if your physician suspects that a sleep disorder is contributing to or causing medical problems, the Center for Disorders of Sleep and Fatigue can help. Once detected, most sleep disorders can be corrected.
